The visa problem is a big one of course so maybe going to NYC, as much as I would love to, doesn't seem like a realistic option, at least not yet. But oh what a dream it would be to spend some time in the Big Apple.

I'm from the North West, soon to graduate with a Film degree. Thinking about the leap to London this summer (after the world cup of course).. It's a big city though! And not cheap..

thats if you can get a visa of course.....

Honestly, I'm not sure.

I just got back from New York and every corner of every block there was some sort of production happening. With this vast amount of production work happening I think NYC might be the best place to start your career.....

Im just about to graduate and am in the same situation with some difficult decissions ahead of me....

Hi Tom,

That's a quite a tough and involved question! It wouldn't be my place to say what you should do, but I can certainly offer up some advice. For one thing the talent is certainly here - I know a lot of people jet off to the States when they start to do well, but in terms of filmmaking talent, we have a lot of that here. So you would certainly be learning from some of the best.

Put it this way, you could do a whole lot worse than kick start your career in the UK. London should be your first port of call, only because that maximizes your chances of getting something and I would also suggest trying to line something up before you make the leap if possible. That could be tricky - but if you have experience from where you are coming from, then that will put you in good stead to get work here. You could also try getting in with a company that has offices both from where you are from and in the UK? Then you could make the transition from one office to another - just a thought. It also depends on what you want to do and want to get into i.e. film, TV, commercials - as a runner, pa, assistant and so on? Hope that helps a bit.

Is the UK the best country for me to start my career in the film industry?
